Tony Awards: Neil Patrick Harris Wows With Opening Song
Never before has there been such a big opening sequence for an awards show. Newsies were running through the aisles, Cinderella danced around the stage, kids sang and danced, Mike Tyson was there, and Neil Patrick Harris did magic tricks! No this wasn’t some weirdly real dream you had, this was the opening to the 2013 Tony Awards.
Hosting for the fourth time, Neil Patrick Harris orchestrated the Tony Awards worthy opening number. He managed to give you a taste of everything good, bad, and drag queen worthy from the last season of theater. He rapped, he sang, he did magic, and then did a rap.
Neil Patrick Harris: Memorable Quotes from 2013 Tony Awards
“They barely come up to your knees, but man, they’re singing like MVPS, and they’re the reason this whole season looks like Chuck E Cheese,” Harris sang about the fantastically talented cast of Annie, A Christmas Story, and Matilda.
“Is there a Tony daycare where all of you go?”
“Can I have my Tom Hooper, Les Mis, close up, please? See on Broadway, we don’t need extreme closeups to show that we’re singing live,” Harris said. “We sing live eight days a week. Check it!”

Back at Radio City Music Hall, the Tony Awards were just spectacular. I love that Harris actaully addressed the kids sitting at home, dreaming of Broadway. He said that everyone in that audience had been there too, and they can make it.
The best part was just seeing the faces of the crowd blown away. Usually they are all composed for the cameras, but this was just too magnifcent to just sit there. Harris received a standing ovation as he hung from a huge Tony Award on the stage.
“Well, that’s our budget, good night!” If it had ended there, it would have been so worth it.
