Aubrey Plaza Stars in Daria Movie Short for CollegeHumor
Possibly the greatest thing we’ll see this week is CollegeHumor’s latest short, starring The To Do List’s Aubrey Plaza. Plaza plays the monotone and totally chill Daria Morgendorffer, who has returned to Lawndale for her ten year college reunion.
While in the cartoon series, Daria was apathetic but witty and smart. She was that jaded high school kid in all of us, the person that outsmarted the shallow jocks every time. In this ten year reunion, Plaza dons the circular glasses and reunites with her best friend Jane Lane (who has a baby) to suffer through the reunion for her sister Quinn.
Plaza has Daria’s monotone down pat, so much so that it’s a little creepy. I can’t believe I never saw the Daria-esque nature in her Parks and Recreation character, April. It looks like Daria has picked up a job as a reporter, or possibly a private investigator. Either way, she’s in a really basic office with a lot of action. Her job allows her to stay in her classic green blazer and black ankle boots.
Every character is back. From her chipper parents to the jocks that I always thought would knock up the cheerleaders to her old flame, Jane’s brother Tom.
Even though it’s just a short, this is so well made and spot on cast that it needs to become something more. A webseries at the least, because Aubrey Plaza’s talents as Daria cannot be wasted.
The To Do List hits theaters Friday.
