Oxygen Cancels Ryan Murphy’s The Glee Project
In a move that is supposed to have nothing to do with recent events, Oxygen has decided not to renew The Glee Project for a third season. Some speculate that the decision was due to Glee star Cory Monteith’s sudden passing on Saturday, but a network spokesman told Hollywood Reporter that it’s because of Glee‘s late renewal.
“The Glee Project will not be returning to Oxygen but we are extremely proud of this series which launched the careers of several talented individuals. The show had so much heart and we thank Ryan Murphy and all of the creative talent who helped make the series a critical darling,” said a statement from Oxygen.
The Glee Project ideally aired between seasons of Glee, so that the winner or contestants selected could be featured on the new season. With taping scheduled to being in a few weeks for season five of Glee, there is no time for casting and competing.
Alex Newell & Blake Jenner Receive Major Parts on Glee After The Glee Project
The first season of The Glee Project was fantastic, launching the careers of Glee stars Damian McGinty, Lindsay Pearce, Samuel Larsen, and Alex Newell. Of those stars, Alex Newell is still on Glee, starring as a gay cross-dressing student. Samuel Larsen had a long run on the series, but it doesn’t look like he’ll return next season. Damian McGinty was a welcomed addition, but his character failed to get a green card to stay in America. Pearce was a delightful villain for a few episodes.
The second season of the series gave us Blake Jenner, playing a new fan favorite Ryder. A third season of the show might have yielded another amazing voice, but now the world will never know.
